Was könnte dein Vorteil sein?

——- The Interview in English starts here ——-

As mentioned elsewhere, I surprised myself to write about socks. At the start of Sapeur – One Step Beyond I could not imagine the topic anyway. With time, you will (still) mature and then you will be more interested in the finishing touch of your Matchday or Saturday evening outfit.
Socks becoming more and more important in the football casual scene as well for the sneakerheads, and many brand gain experience in this market. A brand for socks caught my attention with its designs and patterns even before the launch took place. Since mid of September Place of Birth offers a fresh and smart selection of socks. Reason enough for me to contact Daniel Martin, the maker behind POB, and talk about his young brand, his inspirations and goals. I wish you a lot of fun with what Daniel had to tell.

Hi mate, it´s great to have you with us. Please introduce yourself to our reader.

Daniel Martin, 27, founder Place of Birth.

You have launched on 17th September your project. Please tell us more about the young brand. What is the concept behind Place of Birth and how did all started?

Place of Birth is a new sock brand for anyone that loves their clothes. It really is as simple as that.

POB has a broad target audience, this isn’t something that appeals to one group of people or subculture or style; my own style changes day to day – I don’t pigeon hole myself and that is reflected in POB.
A friend of mine came up with this and it couldn’t be truer – “Like your own Place of Birth. The way you wear it is unique to you and yet at once you share it with so many others” – to me that is spot on and exactly the guide lines I am following.

Where does the name ‘Place of Birth’ come from?

It came from jotting down names and what felt right at the time, impulse decision not overthinking it. I do know that it looks great on the packaging we have now and the new packaging we have planned. Can’t wait for that.

Also, I have made it work. The new logo with the pin location on a sock with the world map on (can be seen on the newsletter header and a sticker customer get plus more stuff as more happens for POB).

As I read you´re working with manufacturers in Portugal which satisfy your demand on Quality. How long did you need for the research?

Originally, I was going to start a clothing brand, I knew a number of premium brands had their product made in Portugal, so I looked into it a bit deeper and I was impressed with what I saw. When I focussed solely on socks, that’s really when I knew Portugal is the place me and this brand to manufacturer. Highly skilled and knowledgeable people.

Christmas eve and after tons of wrapping paper I had only a pair of socks. What was quite boring for me – as I hope it´s something useful – is a big adventure in your life now. If my information is correct, you´re 27. From where do you have the fascination for socks, Dan?

I’m always getting asked, ‘why socks?’ I have been into my clothes for a while (from about 16 years old) and I have dabbled in every style out there – I am easily influenced. As I said, I wanted a clothing brand primarily producing coats. This was a few years ago and if I am honest with myself it was a pipe dream back then, something to get me through the mundane days at work – I was never going to act on it at the time, it was a little bit of escapism…

As my own style developed and I got a bit older, I started to pay attention to so many styles, various music genres, sports and detail but subtle details like what socks I wear with certain shoes or sneakers or to match my top(s) – just like that I fell for socks. An odd thing to fall for I know but I went travelling for just under a year and during that time is when I really started planning my future plucking up the courage to book a few meetings out in Portugal with manufacturers to present my ideas.
It’s come from a love for sneakers and clothes, then matching them up.

What do you want to express with your socks and which gap want you to close in the market?

The market is so far and wide, but POB delivers something fresh, down to earth, affordable and versatile. I look at the Figueroa Navy & Rexford Purple style, that is superb with a pair of Air Force 1’s over them but at the same time you can wear them at your 9 to 5 job with some smart shoes and a suit. That is, it right there! That is appealing to so many people.

Please describe a typical Place of Birth customer if already possible? If not please describe the mentality of your brand.

I couldn’t summarise by describing one person to you, I want Place of Birth to appeal to all people and that is going to be important as more release follow.

The below question and answer kind of follows onto that…

Socks getting more and more important in the football casual scene and for sneakerheads to give their wardrobe a finishing touch. Is the aim for Place of Birth to crowd to this new customer field?

To answer the first part of that sentence, no. However, I grew up around football and I guess my love for clothes did begin around the time I went to football every Saturday because I would see the way people were dressing to go to the game.
With that said, the aim is for Place of Birth to appeal to streetwear fanatics, city boys, whoever – a very broad target market. Anyone that loves clothes – simple as that.

I think streetwear covers a broad spectrum of people that are passionate for style.

You´ve launched Birth of Place last Monday. Congrats mate! How was the first week for you?

Steady start, better than expected! Never know what to expect, this has come from nothing really. I am focused on getting the brand ‘out there’ and just keep on improving.

I want to keep making good socks on a global scale – the next step is to go full time with this. I love the design process, it’s incredible to draw something on your laptop, visit the factory and see the design that’s from a sock silhouette actually on people’s feet.

I really like your styles and you can wear them on sneakers, Wallabees, Desert Boots, whatever.  And the subject socks is getting more and more important and also big fashion labels gain experience in the market. There´s big competition for Birth of Place. What could be your advantage?

Big big big competition in this market but there is always room for more.

With POB there’s no gimmicks, the designs are understated (this time round), the promo shots are in the studio and on the streets – people relate. At the end of the day I am a fan of clothing, I know what I like, I am effectively one of my own target audience, so I know what people like.

My order is done and paid. Dan, it makes a lot of fun see what you have cooking with Birth of Place. Trust me we will keep an eye of your upcoming releases and wish you all the best for the near future. The last words are always for our conversationalist. Please feel free and say what you want to say.

Thank you to everyone who has followed POB and showed their support. It’s early days for the brand but even being at this point now is mad and I am so proud.

I know where POB can go and what it can be, so we will just keep our head down, plan on bringing more and more out in 2019, keep building.
